Gryphon is an Australian brand based in Perth, Western Australia. Its story began in the late 1970s, when Peter Haselhurst, a hockey player and physics student, started reinforcing broken sticks with fibreglass and resin. In the early 1980s he co-founded the company with team-mate Richard Charlesworth, and the brand was officially launched in 1983. In 1990 Gryphon built its first composite stick from fibreglass, carbon and resin.
Today Gryphon makes composite sticks in ranges such as Tour (with Kraibon, an energy-absorbing material, for a more cushioned touch) and Taboo (Blue Steel, Striker and Dekoda variants), as well as bags, protective gear and goalkeeping equipment. The company describes its line-up as covering players from entry level to elite, with different stiffness levels and bow shapes.
