It is a small expense, yet it decides whether the stick "sits" in your hands during fast dribbling and shooting or turns in them. Here is how chamois differs from synthetic, how to tell it is time for a replacement, and how to wrap a grip the way the manufacturer recommends so it does not slide after two sessions.

Chamois: the classic for wet weather

Chamois grips are a field hockey classic because they cope well with moisture – and hockey pitches are watered. Chamois absorbs water and sweat, so your hold stays secure even with a wet hand. Some players wet their chamois before a game for an even firmer hold, but it is not necessary: Ritual describes the Chamois Classic as comfortable both wet and dry, and how a dry grip feels depends on the model and your preference.

The classic choice is the Ritual Chamois Classic Grip – smooth chamois in several colours. If you prefer a more pronounced texture under your fingers, there is also the Ritual Chamois Tex Grip – a textured chamois-style grip with a raised pattern that increases friction. You will find chamois grips under Grips & Tapes.

Synthetic: soft and no soaking needed

Synthetic grips (PU, foams) are a varied group – thickness, springiness and durability depend on how a specific product is built, so check the description of the model rather than just the material. What they share is that they need no wetting, which is handy indoors, where hands tend to sweat rather than get wet.

One example is the Ritual Super Soft Grip – a soft grip that Ritual fits as standard on some of its sticks. According to the manufacturer it reduces vibration, gives a cushioned feel and does not slip whatever the weather.

When to replace the grip

when it is worn shiny where the right hand holds – that is usually where it wears fastest,

when the stick turns in your hands on a shot even though you are gripping it hard,

when the chamois has gone stiff as cardboard and does not soften after wetting,

when the edge of the grip peels and curls – every following session only makes it worse.

There is no single answer to how long a grip lasts – it depends on the model, moisture, how you hold the stick and how often you train. Go by the signs listed above, and keep a spare grip in your bag so the replacement does not fall on match day.

How to wrap a grip step by step

The steps below follow Ritual's instructions for the Chamois Classic, Chamois Tex and Super Soft grips. If you have a grip from another brand, follow that manufacturer's instructions.

Remove the old grip and clean off any glue residue – best with a damp cloth, no solvents.

Start roughly halfway up the shaft: lay the beginning of the grip at an angle and wrap it once around so it does not shift.

Wrap upwards, towards the end of the handle, overlapping each turn by about 5 mm – evenly and without creases.

Keep the grip pulled tight the whole time; wrapped too loosely, it will slide after the first session.

Finish at the end of the handle and secure the end with finishing, electrical or medical tape.

If you prefer a firmer hold, you can lightly wet chamois before the first game and shape it in your hands – it is not essential.

Tip: if the handle is too thin for you, do not remove the factory grip – wrap the new one over it and gain a few millimetres of circumference without buying a new stick.
